If you’ve been even vaguely paying attention to royal news, then you have probably seen that Meghan Markle has been bashed in the media for months. Some outlets say that she’s rude and the people who work in the palace find her hard to work with. Others paint her out to be a cold, calculating money-hungry starlet who jumped on the opportunity to marry a royal. In all of these stories, the Duchess becomes more of a character than an actual person.
After months of suffering from the public scrutiny quietly, Markle has finally revealed that she is really struggling.
Public harassment of Meghan Markle
Markle can’t seem to do anything right in the eyes of the public. When she wore jeans to Wimbledon, people said that she was classless. When she hugged Beyonce at the European premiere of The Lion King, people said that she broke royal protocol.
But recently, Prince Harry has revealed that he has had enough of the public crucifying of his wife. In a statement, he announced that he and Markle were suing the parent company of Mail on Sunday, which has been the source of many of these salacious stories.
“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” he wrote.
He was sure to point out that there are real consequences to attacking someone day after day.
“There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been.” he continued. “Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe. One day’s coverage is no longer tomorrow’s chip-paper.”
Markle reveals she’s not okay
Markle has been pretty quiet when it comes to defending herself, but in a recent clip from a preview of the upcoming ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, the Duchess spoke about how much pain all of the criticism has caused her.
“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she said, looking tearful.
“Then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she told reporter Tom Bradby. “So, you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um . . . yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
When Bradby asked if it was fair to say that she was not doing okay, the duchess said, “yes.”
Fans rally around Markle
Since the clip has surfaced, people have been taking to the internet to express their support for Markle.
“I was never one to comment or post on the royals or pay much attention unless there was something big going on, but the treatment of #MeghanMarkle has made me into one of her defenders,” one person tweeted. “It’s heartbreaking!”
The Duchess got so much support that the hashtag #WeLoveYouMeghan started trending.
