Not so long ago chiropractic treatment was scorned by many in the medical community. It was classified as voodoo medicine; insurance companies did not recognize or pay for chiropractic manipulation because it wasn’t performed by a ‘real’ doctor. Slowly, however, chiropractic medicine became more accepted by the public at large and by medical insurance companies as a legitimate force in the relief from sciatic nerve pain. Today, chiropractors are not only sought out by people suffering from lower back issues, insurance companies pay for chiropractic manipulation as well.
Let’s be honest here, most people will try home remedies for sciatica before they decide to visit their family doctor. They try remedies like heating pads, ice packs, over-the-counter pain relievers, herbs, and many other home remedies. When self-treatment doesn’t work out, they decide to see their doctor, something they should have done in the first place. While most doctors recommend physical therapy as a first choice for back pain relief, many will also include a list of chiropractors in group of therapists they recommend for consultation.
Chiropractic treatment of the back is a two-pronged therapy. On the one hand, chiropractors adjust the spine through manual manipulation of the spine to align the spine correctly. Chiropractic adjustment alone produces a greater range of motion, releases pressure on nerves and relieves pain. On the other hand, chiropractors push core conditioning as a way to support proper spinal alignment and suggest exercises and stretches similar to those that a physical therapist suggests.
The chiropractic adjustment is a high-velocity, rapid thrust to the vertebra. Because this adjustment releases gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide trapped in the spaces between the vertebra which, when released, produces a popping sound, people often talk about having their back cracked. After a chiropractic manipulation may apply an electrical stimulation along with heat or ice as a way to further relax your core muscles. A series of adjustments is usually required to carry out the goal of relief from pain.
Chiropractic adjustment as relief from sciatic nerve pain is becoming much more common among people suffering from chronic lower back pain. Chiropractic therapy is aimed at curing the whole body and not merely attacking the cause of the pain. This holistic approach, like all other holistic therapies, requires a commitment on the part of the sufferer to engage in the activities that cure the whole body thereby relieving the pain.
